The general public in Podanur, a fast growing transit hub, have sought the intervention of Kinathukadavu MLA and Minister for Prohibition and Excise K. Vignesh to rectify the shortcomings in bus services and basic amenities.

Barring morning and evening hours, city buses do not pass through Podanur. For instance, 4C service towards Saibaba Colony has been discontinued, and the Pink Bus services for exclusive travel by women has not been provided for Podanur residents, a petition submitted to the Minister by general secretary of Podanur Train Users’ Association N. Subramanian said.

The petition also highlighted inadequacies in drinking water supply in parts of Ward 85, and complained of flow of saline water through the pipelines.

The residents, Mr. Subramanian said, were unhappy with the absence of stormwater drainage along the Kurichi Pirivu-Podanur Road.

Complaining of frequent traffic congestion, they emphasised widening the stretch from Kurichi Pirivu to Podanur Railway Station into a four-lane road.

They also urged the Minister to revive the project for widening the road from Podanur Rail Mandapam to Nanjundapuram.

Other demands included completion of underground drainage works in Bhajanai Kovil Street, Karunanidhi Nagar and other localities; effective steps to streamline garbage disposal; and construction of bus shelters at stoppages teeming with crowds of travelling public.

They urged the Minister to prevail upon the Police Department to permit restaurants near Podanur Railway Station to operate till midnight, factoring in the needs of passengers utilising the late night train services.
