In an encounter with the police, five members of gangster Deepak Nandal’s gang were shot, four were killed in Gurugram late Thursday night. Three policemen also sustained bullet injuries during the encounter.
All injured were admitted to a hospital.
The five miscreants arrived at property dealer Vishal's house at A block, Sushant Lok-1, in a black Scorpio. The police impounded the vehicle and some weapons from the spot and initiated an investigation. A window of the vehicle was also shattered during the firing. Vishal was alone at home at the time of the incident, said a senior police officer.
According to the police, three of the deceased miscreants were residents of Rohtak and the fourth was a resident of Fatehabad, while the injured one was identified as Shivam, a resident of Kota Bisar in Nuh district. Three police personnel — ASI Sunil, Constable Manjit and Constable Shamsher from Crime Branch Sector-40 — also sustained gunshot wounds and were admitted to Medanta Hospital.
According to the police, the incident took place around 11:30 pm. It is learnt that the assailants had held property dealer Vishal Berry, son of the founder of Gurugram-based SGT University, hostage at his residence in Sushant Lok.
The police investigation revealed that Vishal's father had parted ways with the university.
According to the police, Crime Branch teams received information from the Police Control Room about armed criminals travelling in a suspicious Scorpio SUV. By the time the teams reached the Sushant Lok area, the criminals had allegedly begun firing at Berry's residence using sophisticated weapons. The victim had reportedly been receiving extortion messages from a wanted gangster based abroad. The gangster had demanded several crore rupees from Vishal Beri, a native of Jhajjar district.
As soon as the Crime Branch, Sector 40, team arrived in the Sushant Lok area, the miscreants began firing at Berry's house. The police team then called upon the miscreants to surrender, but they opened fire on the police instead. After this, the police team surrounded the criminals, leading to an exchange of fire, in which four of them were killed and one was injured. Three policemen also sustained bullet injuries. A senior police officer said Berry was rescued safely.
“The bodies of criminals were sent for a post-mortem examination. Details regarding the slain criminals, weapons seized and other facts would be shared after verification. A further probe is under way,” said Dharmbir Singh, ACP, Sadar.
