A Circle Inspector attached to the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) was taken into police custody on Friday after he allegedly attempted to forcefully free a few detainees held at the Nedumangad police station. The Home department has ordered an inquiry against the officer, who has been identified as Yahiya. According to official sources, four people were apprehended by the Nedumangad police in Chullimanoor late on Thursday in connection with a dispute over a football match. The group, found to be carrying iron rods, were subsequently lodged in the lock-up at the police station.
Around noon on Friday, Mr. Yahiya arrived at the police station and demanded the release of two of the detainees, claiming they were his relatives. However, the personnel on duty refused to release them after maintaining that the investigation into the alleged incident was still underway.
The officer then purportedly entered the station, proceeded towards the lock-up area and attempted to release the detainees. He also created a commotion inside the station when he was prevented by the other officers. He was soon taken into custody. He is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
