The Puducherry Police have recommended the suspension of 2,747 driving licences for various traffic offences in the last six months.

Giving an account of the special drive launched by the Traffic Police in January this year to enforce traffic rules, Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, D. Divya, in a release, said the department has recommended the suspension of 2,747 driving licences of habitual offenders. 

During the drive held from January to June, the police have registered cases against persons involved in rash and dangerous driving under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act. In addition, the driving licences of habitual and serious traffic violators, have been recommended for suspension, she said. 

Altogether, 86,271 individuals, including 30,342 two- wheeler riders not wearing helmet, have been prosecuted for various traffic violations in the last six months. In cases involving minor driving, the parents or guardians were summoned to the Traffic Police Station, counselled, and given warning, the release said. 

However, appropriate legal action was initiated in the case of underage driving, including registration of FIRs in 11 instances of minors being caught while riding two-wheelers or four-wheelers. Enforcement of action against traffic violators would continue on a sustained basis throughout the year, the SSP said. 

“People are advised to strictly follow traffic rules, wear helmet, seat belt and avoid using mobile phones while driving. Also, people are advised not to drive under the influence of alcohol and refrain from rash driving. Responsible behaviour is essential to prevent road accidents,” she said.
