The police on Friday seized about 700 grams of gold that a Kerala native was carrying without proper documents during a vehicle check at Walayar inter-State checkpost.

The police said that Mohammed (65), a resident of Varavoor in Thrissur district, was found carrying three melted gold bars and two gold bangles weighing about 700 grams while inspecting a Coimbatore-bound Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mohammed’s son Najmudeen (35) was running a small jewellery workshop at Thrissur. The gold seized were old ornaments melted at the workshop, which were being transported from Kerala to Tamil Nadu.

As the person failed to produce valid documents for transporting the gold articles, the police seized the same for further investigation. The seized property was handed over to the Income Tax Department for further action, said the police.
