A construction worker was arrested by the police and half-a-sovereign gold earring was recovered from his possession on Saturday.
On Friday morning, a 70-year-old woman was found dead in her dwelling in Yerwadi. Following a complaint from the victim’s daughter, the police registered a case.
SP G. Chandeesh formed special teams. After the CCTV footage in the vicinity was scanned, the teams interrogated at least 100 people and finally zeroed in on a suspect at Chatrakudi tea stall.
Based on his confession, the police realised that the accused, who was engaged in construction of a bus stop shelter near the woman’s dwelling, had taken ₹10,000 from the aged woman sometime ago. Despite not returning, he had insisted the woman to lend him some more money, to which she had reportedly rejected.
A wordy altercation led to physical assault and the accused pushed the aged woman on the floor and cut off her ear and robbed the gold earring, police said and added that they had recovered the jewel.
The SP said that from the time they received the complaint, the teams fanned out and solved the case within about 12 hours.
