Heavier penalties, stricter enforcement, and stringent action against vehicles violating transport regulations in Telangana are in the offing, with the Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar directing officials of the department to step up inspections and crack down on a range of offences.

Mr Prabhakar chaired a review meeting where he instructed officials to impose hefty penalties on owners of vehicles that have not paid quarterly taxes, and to seize such vehicles. Underscoring passenger safety, he said violations of regulations by sleeper buses should not be tolerated under any circumstances, and that strict action must be taken immediately whenever such violations are detected.

The Minister instructed officials to intensify enforcement activities across the State and conduct extensive inspections. He said that focus should be on overloaded vehicles, and those that have not paid quarterly taxes. Vehicles operating without valid fitness certificates too will be penalised. Vehicles found violating the rules should be seized wherever necessary, he said.
