A 19-year-old student of Presidency College was injured after he was allegedly attacked by a five-member gang armed with knives near the college campus in Chennai on Wednesday.

The victim, Kumar, a second-year B.A. Economics student from Tiruvallur district, sustained multiple cut injuries in the attack.

According to the police, Kumar had gone to a food stall behind the college after classes, when five men arrived on two motorcycles and allegedly assaulted him with knives. The assailants fled the scene as students and passers-by rushed to his aid.

He was taken to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in an autorickshaw and admitted for treatment.

Based on an intimation from the hospital, the Marina police registered a case and launched an investigation. Police are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the five suspects.
