Even as the AAP-led government is trying to win over women voters by offering various social welfare schemes, several women residents of Ibban Kalan village say they have been denied the benefits and are upset with the government.
Widows Sukhwinder Kaur, Kashmiro, Rani, Bimla, Lakhwinder and Kulwant Kaur said they were not receiving assistance under various welfare schemes, despite being among those who should have been given priority.
Kulwant Kaur, 60, said she had not received any form of government assistance, despite having approached the village panchayat several times.
Kashmiro Kaur, 74, said three of her sons had separated from the family, while her fourth son lived with her. She is looking after his three daughters after his wife abandoned the family. Despite her circumstances, she said she was not receiving any government assistance, neither a widow pension nor benefits under the Atta-Daal scheme.
Sukhwinder Kaur, 42, has two teenage sons who attend school. Her husband, Jagtar Singh, a daily-wage worker at a nut and bolt manufacturing unit, died about three years ago. She said the responsibility of supporting the entire family had since fallen on her shoulders.
She recalled that a member of the village panchayat had visited her house, taken photographs and promised that the government would provide financial assistance to replace the dilapidated wooden plank roof with a concrete one.
The mother of two said she was receiving a widow pension of Rs 1,500 per month but was not getting free ration under the Atta-Daal scheme. She termed it an injustice to her family.
She said many well-off families in the village had received one litre of mustard oil, 2 kg of cholleyan di daal, 2 kg of sugar, 1 kg of salt, 250 gm of turmeric and 30 kg of atta during the first week of this month. Beneficiaries told her that they had received the supplies after a gap of four months, but her family, despite being needy, had not received anything.
Another resident of the village, Arvinder Kaur, pointed towards the ceiling of her house and said it was made of wooden planks. More than a year ago, a panchayat member had visited her house, taken photographs and got her to fill out a form after assuring her that funds would soon be released to replace the roof with a concrete one. However, no amount has been released so far.
Kabal Singh, the village sarpanch, said forms of all eligible women beneficiaries had been filled and were awaiting submission once the app was operational. He said the village had received only the wheat supply, while ration kits were yet to arrive.
He also claimed that the panchayat had not received any grant for replacing dilapidated wooden roofs with concrete ones.
