The proposed redevelopment of the Central Bus Stand at Gandhipuram in Coimbatore city remains stalled as the detailed project report (DPR) awaits approval from the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA).

Built in 1972, the city’s oldest bus terminal handles around 30,000 passengers a day with services to Mettupalayam, Sathyamangalam, Tiruppur, Avinashi, Erode, Salem, and Namakkal.

The Corporation has proposed redeveloping the bus stand at ₹30 crore by demolishing the existing structure and constructing a modern terminal. The plan includes construction of about 90 bus bays with proper signage, a ground-plus-one commercial complex, parking for over 2,000 two-wheelers, passenger waiting halls, feeding rooms, toilet blocks, and dedicated ticketing and maintenance areas.

The existing facility suffers from poor drainage, resulting in water stagnation during rain, clogged drains, inadequate seating and parking, and deteriorating infrastructure, including peeling plaster in parts of the building.

The proposal to renovate at ₹10 crore the Singanallur Bus Stand, operational since 2020, has also seen little progress. The terminal handles more than 300 bus services to the southern districts, including Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Karur, Thoothukudi and Tiruchirappalli.

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja said the DPRs for the Central Bus Stand redevelopment and the proposed Vellalore bus terminus were revised and resubmitted to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) last week. “We have revised the DPR and submitted it to the DMA along with the Vellalore bus stand project. We hope it will be reviewed soon and will continue to follow it up,” he said.
