A section of the public and farmers laid siege to the Coimbatore Corporation’s office at Chinnavedampatti opposing the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) near Chinnavedampatti tank. They petitioned civic body officials, demanding them to immediately relocate the project.
The petition stated that Chinnavedampatti tank under the control of the Water Resources Department is an important freshwater reservoir created by the local residents who donated their lands. The tank was created to mitigate flood water coming from the Western Ghats through the Sanganur stream, to raise the groundwater level in the northern and eastern parts of Coimbatore, and to fulfil drinking water, agricultural, industrial and environmental needs.
The 200-acre tank with a capacity to store up to 30 million cubic feet of freshwater is linked with the Avinashi - Athikadavu Groundwater Recharge Scheme, having a prospect of receiving freshwater from River Bhavani in the future, it said.
The petition alleged that the construction of the STP to treat sewage coming from about 20 wards of the Corporation and discharge it into the Chinnavedampatti tank completely contradicts the fundamental purpose for which the tank was created.
