New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Sunday posted a copy of a letter he wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah on X, demanding accountability for police action that took place against student protests in Delhi on July 20, 2026.
In the letter, Gandhi writes, “I write to demand accountability for the barbaric assault on students who were peacefully protesting in Delhi on July 20, 2026. Our students were demanding a fair and accountable education system. Instead of being heard, security forces assaulted them with indiscriminate force, including lethal weapons and tear gas.”
After the Sansad March call out to protesters by the Cockroach Janata Party in Delhi on July 20, visuals of police action on protesting students saw condemnation come in from various quarters, including from Rahul Gandhi.
In a press conference on Friday, Gandhi alleged that students protesting peacefully over the alleged NEET paper leak were subjected to excessive force by security personnel. He referred to the use of pellet guns, claiming that Sahil, one of the students injured during the protest, was struck by a pellet that severely damaged one of his eyes.
In his letter to the Home Minister today, Gandhi again raised the issue of the use of pellet guns, saying, “Reports in the media and social media clearly show people who have suffered grave injuries, including a journalist. I met 19-year old student Sahil Lochab, who is now in severe pain is likely to lose an eye because he was shot with pellet guns.”
He also accused that women students were assaulted by policemen, including by “deliberately targeting their private parts.”
Eventually, Rahul Gandhi in his Sunday’s letter asked accountability from the Home Minister, arguing that it is to him that security forces deployed in Delhi answer ultimately to. “As Home Minister, did you approve the use of lethal force including pellet guns against students? If not, who did?,” he asks. Also questioning about “people in plain clothes seen beating students with lathis police personnel or volunteers”, and their deployment.
