Brandon Aiyuk's callout of Jayden Daniels on social media blew up what seemed like a positive development for the wide receiver, knocking him back to square one. The public display drew the ire of many pundits, including one blockbuster sports analyst.
In a statement made in a Tuesday video clip on the "Herd with Colin Cowherd" via Coach Yac, Cowherd delivered a rant about why the Rams have succeeded while the 49ers have run out of gas. Cowherd used Aiyuk's continued existence on the team as his biggest point.

Of course, the 49ers have not moved on and have continued to wait for a potential trade offer to materialize. Meanwhile, teams like the Rams and Denver Broncos have revitalized their organizations after saying goodbye via the most immediately expensive strategy to veterans like Cooper Kupp and Russell Wilson. Both franchises are coming off breakout seasons one year after separation.
The 49ers have waited for the right trade opportunity for some time. However, such an offer has seemingly not arrived. As such, Brandon Aiyuk holds all of the cards for the moment.
The 49ers receiver would cost the team more to release than to keep (Spotrac), which explains why he hasn't been cut.
However, that changes in 2027, when the 49ers can release Aiyuk for less than it would cost to keep him around. From the 49ers' perspective, there are two more major windows to receive some draft capital and clear the books in one fell swoop.
Training camp often arrives with significant injuries to veterans, which would open up some need and thus leverage for the 49ers. The trade deadline around mid-season also can generate some additional interest in making a deal.
As such, holding on has its advantages, especially when talking about potentially waiting just one season.
If the San Francisco 49ers wanted to release Aiyuk immediately as soon as it became apparent that things were not going to work out in his four-year, $120 million deal, that would have been the time to do so. Of course, hindsight is 20/20.
