The residents of Gorimedu in Salem city have demanded the relocation of a Tasmac outlet in the locality.
The outlet, functioning on Yercaud Main Road at Gorimedu, is located within a 500-meters radius of Government Women’s Arts College and several places of worship.
P. Gowtham, a resident of Gorimedu, alleged that the outlet’s customers park their vehicles on the motorable space of Yercaud Main Road, affecting vehicle movement. In the evening and during weekends, the customers wait in long queue to buy liquor. After consuming it in the locality, they throw the bottles on the road. During evening, college students are afraid to pass through the area. Recently, miscreants hurled a molotov cocktail at the outlet, he added.
S. Nandhini, another resident, said that when Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced that the 717 Tasmac outlets functioning within a 500-metre radius of bus stands, temples, and educational institutions would be removed, the residents hoped that the outlet would be shifted. Despite the presence of places of worship and a government college in the vicinity, this shop continued to operate. The outlet should be closed to ensure women’s safety, she added.
When contacted, Tasmac officials said that they would look into the issue.
