A petition seeking an inquiry into alleged irregularities in the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society at Oottuvazhmadam and restoration of services under the society was submitted at the weekly grievance redress meeting held at Kanniyakumari District collectorate on Monday.

The petition was submitted at the weekly grievance redress meeting chaired by Kanniyakumari District Collector M. Prathap.

Residents, led by CPIML, submitted the petition stating that the society established in 1960, has around 7,000 members and had played a significant role in supporting local residents through various lona schemes. Many members have also deposited their savings with the society over the years.

According to the residents, alleged irregularities by certain functionaries of the society have adversely affected its operation. The residents claimed that the benefit of the state government’s crop loan waiver scheme had not reached several eligible beneficiaries. They further alleged that depositors were unable to withdraw their savings, with the society’s secretary reportedly citing lack of sufficient funds to repay the deposits and for other essential services.

The petitioners urged the government to conduct a thorough inquiry into the alleged irregularities, take action against those responsible and recover the lost funds. They also requested that the cooperative society be restored and allowed to function from its original premises so that members and local residents can continue to avail themselves of its services.
