A high-level review meeting chaired by Kerala Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer on Thursday (July 17, 2026) decided to upgrade the Sabarimala roads and the related road network to high standards by November, 2026, ahead of the next Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season at the Ayyappa temple.
According to the Minister, renovation of the Sabarimala roads has not been carried out properly since 2021 due to various reasons. The delay in laying pipes under the Jal Jeevan Mission has also adversely affected the condition of the Sabarimala roads.
However, the Minister said that this time, all Sabarimala roads will be completely repaired, ensuring quality.
The review meeting was attended by senior Public Works department (PWD) officials from the districts connected to Sabarimala.
The Minister also announced that priority would be given to road safety along with improving the standard of the roads. As part of the initiative, road markings, signboards, direction boards and other safety measures will be in place.
Mr. Basheer directed officials to submit new proposals for road repairs within a week and to complete the renovation of rest houses and other maintenance works in the area by November, 2026. He informed that a review meeting on the department’s works will be held at Pampa on July 21, 2026.
Additional Secretary of the Public Works department V.R. Vinod and Chief Engineers and PWD officials from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam districts attended the review meeting.
