New Delhi: Tensions gripped central Delhi on Monday after the Cockroach Janata Party’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march led to clashes between protesters and police during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Thousands of CJP supporters gathered at Jantar Mantar to demand action over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. Opposition leaders also joined the protest. Police used tear gas and mild force after demonstrators allegedly tried to cross barricades and move towards Parliament.
Several Delhi Police personnel reportedly suffered injuries during the confrontation. Police alleged that protesters threw stones at security personnel deployed near the barricades.
“We were standing near barricades, stone was pelted by them (protesters),” ANI quoted a police officer as saying.
The CJP accused police of using excessive force. It alleged that several protesters, including activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife and a 12-year-old girl, were assaulted. Delhi Police rejected reports of violence and described claims about the use of force and detentions as misleading.
Police detained several protesters near Parliament Street. PTI reported that at least seven CJP supporters were detained near the Reserve Bank of India after they reached the high-security area and raised slogans.
CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das presented three demands during talks with Union Health Minister J P Nadda. They sought Wangchuk’s release, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation and Rs 1 crore in compensation for the families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also met Pradhan at his Parliament office. Officials did not disclose details of their discussion.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke ended his indefinite hunger strike at Wangchuk’s request. Wangchuk remained under treatment at Safdarjung Hospital after a 21-day fast.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation closed five stations due to security concerns. The restrictions caused crowding at Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk and other stations.
Some protesters raised slogans inside metro premises. Security personnel used mild force to disperse crowds near Patel Chowk.
Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the protest in Parliament. “This is a matter concerning students; I am speaking about the futures of lakhs of children. Thousands of students have gathered at Jantar Mantar for this cause. A lathi-charge has taken place there. The government is trying to use force, suppress voices, and drive them away.”
Senior AAP leaders Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Atishi also joined the demonstration.
