Deputy Chief Minister N. Bhatti Vikramarka, who also handles the portfolio of energy, has instructed the officials concerned to ensure optimum power generation in all thermal power stations of the Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited (TG-Genco) in view of the impact of El Niño weather conditions.

He stated that he would soon undertake field-level inspections of Singareni coal mines to ensure adequate and uninterrupted supply of quality coal to all thermal power stations in the State which have coal linkage with Singareni.

At a review meeting on the Energy Department held here on Tuesday, he stated that there was a possibility of adverse impact on hydel generation due to the El Niño conditions. Despite having approvals to supply 14 million tonnes of G9 grade coal annually from Singareni, delays in construction by the previous government led to multiple issues, the Deputy CM noted.

Despite challenges in coal supply, Genco thermal power plants successfully generated 27,908 million units of energy in 2025–26, meeting 31% of the State’s total energy needs, the Deputy CM said, adding that it was an increase from 25.14% in 2024–25.

He expressed confidence that with improved coal supply, Genco could meet up to 40% of the State’s energy needs. He also stated that steps were being taken to commission the 5th unit of YTPS by September 2026.
