Sean Avery has revealed the role he will play in an upcoming CBS series inspired by Albert Einstein. The former NHL forward said he plays a hockey coach suspected of killing a referee in Einstein starring Matthew Gray Gubler.

Avery spoke about the project on a recent episode of Spittin' Chiclets, saying he had spent a week filming the series in Montreal.

The series follows Lewis Einstein, Albert Einstein's great-grandson who teams up with a police detective to solve homicide cases. Matthew Gray Gubler stars as the lead while Melissa Fumero is also part of the cast. The show is based on the German procedural dramedy of the same name and is scheduled to premiere during CBS' 2026-27 broadcast season.

Sean Avery has continued to take on acting roles since retiring from professional hockey. During his 10 NHL seasons he recorded 90 goals and 247 points while playing for the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars and New York Rangers.

He has also appeared in several film and television projects over the years, including portraying Laodamas, a member of Odysseus' crew, in a recent screen adaptation of The Odyssey.

Einstein won't be Sean Avery's first acting project. The former NHL forward recently appeared as Laodamas, a member of Odysseus' crew, in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. He had also worked with Nolan on the 2023 film Oppenheimer.

In an interview with Daily Faceoff, Sean Avery said working on Nolan's film sets changed the way he looks at teamwork. He compared the experience to his rookie season with the Detroit Red Wings, when he shared the dressing room with veterans including Nicklas Lidstrom, Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Sergei Fedorov, Brett Hull, Pavel Datsyuk, Chris Chelios and head coach Scotty Bowman.

Avery said acting helped him understand teamwork in a way that hockey never did, explaining that every person on a film set plays an important role in the final product.

Before moving into acting, Sean Avery spent 10 NHL seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars and New York Rangers, recording 90 goals, 157 assists and 1,533 penalty minutes.
