The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has requested the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority to examine the possibility of sensitising the general public through the Madurai District Legal Services Authority about the establishment of the bone bank in the Government Rajaji Hospital and its advantages.

A Division Bench of Justices C. V. Karthikeyan and R. Sakthivel asked the authorities to also examine the possibility of sensitising the general public about the salient features of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994. The bone bank was opened in the Government Rajaji Hospital in December 2021.

Taking note of the fact that as on date 197 persons had benefited from the bone bank since 2022, the court said more publicity and sensitisation would have to be given to the public about the availability of the feature.

The court disposed of the public interest litigation petition filed in 2020 by M. Vetri Selvan of Madurai. He had sought a direction to the government to establish a bone bank in the Government Rajaji Hospital.
