Shane van Gisbergen delivered one of the strongest oval performances of his NASCAR Cup Series career on Sunday, finishing fifth in the Window World 450 at North Wilkesboro Speedway. The result came after the Trackhouse Racing driver ran at the front throughout the race, narrowly missed a Stage 1 victory and strengthened his position above the Chase cutline with five races left.
The performance stood out because of Trackhouse's difficult 2026 campaign. While the team has struggled to consistently challenge at the front, SVG continues his rapid development on ovals under crew chief Stephen Doran by matching some of the best short-track drivers on a circuit where experience has traditionally mattered most.
Speaking to SiriusXM Radio after the race, team owner Justin Marks described it as Shane van Gisbergen's best NASCAR performance.
Justin Marks' praise reflected just how complete Shane van Gisbergen's race had been. The Kiwi spent the entire evening inside the fight at the front, leading four times for 49 laps, second only to Joey Logano's race-high 323.
Shane van Gisbergen scored in both stages with finishes of second and fifth, one of five drivers to collect stage points twice. His 47-point haul ranked third in the field behind only Logano (73) and runner-up Denny Hamlin (51), while he spent 449 of the race's 450 laps inside the top 15, matching the NASCAR veterans.
Marks said those numbers carry extra weight considering SVG's lack of oval experience:
Shane van Gisbergen had already shown his pace with a third-place finish in Saturday's Truck Series race before translating that speed on Sunday. It also moved him to 54 points clear of 17th-placed Erik Jones in the NASCAR standings.
Justin Marks had expressed confidence after Shane van Gisbergen's Sonoma victory last month that the Kiwi would reach the playoffs. However, the margin quickly narrowed over the following weeks. Entering North Wilkesboro, SVG's advantage had shrunk to just 31 points, making another strong oval result increasingly important with the road-course portion of the schedule complete.
Sunday's fifth-place finish changed that picture significantly. With four conventional ovals and one superspeedway left before the playoffs, Marks believes the confidence gained could carry into similar tracks that follow (1:50 onwards):
The optimism around Shane van Gisbergen comes as the rest of the Trackhouse lineup continues to search for consistency. Rookie Connor Zilisch endured another difficult weekend with a 32nd-place finish, while Ross Chastain finished outside the top 20 for the ninth time this season as his playoff hopes continue to fade.
