India captain Shreyas Iyer admitted his side had once again fallen short in execution across departments after England sealed the T20I series with a dominant nine-wicket victory.

Iyer top-scored with an unbeaten 80 as India posted 158 for seven, but England made light work of the chase, reaching the target in just 13.5 overs.

“Again, it was a disappointing one. 158 wasn’t the perfect total on the board. Eventually, we saw how quickly they chased it down,” Iyer said.

“When we came on to bowl, I just asked the bowlers to repeat the lengths as much as possible. Top of middle and leg was difficult to score off. We fell short on our execution.”

While pleased with his own innings, Iyer said personal performances mattered little without a victory.

“Definitely happy with my performance, but if it’s not in a winning cause, it just goes to the side. Whenever I play, I want to perform and see to it that my team wins.”

Iyer described the Indian side as being in transition and backed the players to learn quickly from their mistakes.

“This is a transition phase and we will be making mistakes. We have to realise how important it is to adapt. I’m sure there are quick learners in the team and they will assess themselves.”

England captain Harry Brook credited his side’s adaptability and communication, while also praising Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue for their impact.

A series sweep in Southampton on Saturday would see England replace world champion India at the top of the T20I rankings.
