India captain Shreyas Iyer threw his wicket away during a massive chase in the fifth T20I against England. The Men in Blue are in a must-win position to avoid a whitewash after having lost the series 0-3.
Asked to bat first, England posted a gigantic total of 257/3 on the back of a stunning century from Jos Buttler (131) and an unbeaten 95 from Harry Brook. In reply, India lost both their openers inside the powerplay. They were 55/2 in 5.1 overs when skipper Shreyas Iyer walked out to the middle.
Iyer got off the mark with a boundary, making his intentions clear from the word go. He smashed another four off his third ball and got himself going. The skipper looked well set for another big score, but ended up gifting his wicket sooner than expected.
On the first ball of the tenth over from Liam Dawson, he went after a full delivery that was fired in. He swung his bat hard across the line after stepping out, only to get a thick leading edge that went flying to backward point. Sam Curran accepted the catch as Shreyas Iyer had to walk back for 28 runs off 16 balls. His knock included four boundaries at a strike rate of 175.

Following his dismissal, India were down to 110/3 in 10.1 overs. It also ended a crucial 55-run stand off just 30 balls for the third wicket between himself and Ishan Kishan.
Shreyas Iyer looked good for his 28 despite failing to convert the start. It was a reflection of his fine form with the bat throughout the series. While he failed as a captain, losing the series and struggling to gather his team, he impressed with the bat on a personal note.
With most of the Indian batters failing to perform, Iyer was consistent though, scoring 218 runs from five games at an average of 54.50 and a strike rate of 157.97 with two half-centuries.
His top score of an unbeaten 49-ball 80 came in the fourth T20I, where he hit four boundaries and five maximums at a strike rate of 163.27. His batting has been one among the very few positives for India in an otherwise disappointing series.
