Suburban train services on the Beach-Tambaram and Chengalpattu section was affected due to a signal failure in the Beach railway station on Tuesday evening, causing severe hardships to hundreds of commuters returning home.
T. Gunasekar, a resident of Avadi, said the disruption and the halting of train at Egmore railway station resulted in passengers bound for the Dr. MGR Chennai Central station, having to engage costlier autos for reaching the next station.
A senior official of Southern Railway said a technical glitch in the signalling system at the Beach railway station resulted in trains arriving and departing from the Beach station to be halted. Even as the failure happened during the peak evening rush hour, trains coming from Tambaram and Chengalpattu were stopped at Egmore and Park railway stations, while other train services including the Mass Rapid Transit system (MRTS) were operated normally.
The railway official said to minimise the issue, the trains were operated to Tambaram from Egmore railway station. The maintenance staff attended the signal failure on both lines and normal train services began after one hour.
