The Tamil Nadu Police will expand the Singappen Special Force (SSF) with an additional number of 200 teams across the State, according to Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal.
“In the first phase, we launched the 70 teams. Now, we are going to launch additional teams, around 200, in the second phase. Each commissionerate and district police limit will get additional teams,” Mr. Aggarwal told The Hindu after opening the All Women Police Station, Coimbatore East, on the premises of the Peelamedu police station in Coimbatore on Thursday evening.
The DGP said that SSF succeeded in creating awareness on the safety of women and children. The force took prompt action to rescue girl children on many occasions. The SSF personnel have also taken swift action in several cases of harassment of women.
“They are also visiting various institutes to create awareness. It has made a very good impact,” he said.
On the current trend of crimes against women and children, Mr. Aggarwal said there was no increase in such crimes compared to the previous year.
“Recently we have got very good convictions in crimes against women and children. So we are hopeful that it will create a good deterrent,” said Mr. Aggarwal, who held review meetings with officers in the West Zone and Coimbatore city earlier in the day.
The AWPS, Coimbatore East, with the jurisdictional limits of the Singanallur range of the Coimbatore City Police, had been functioning next to the Ramanathapuram police station in the Podanur range. Now the AWPS has been shifted to the jurisdictional limits of the Singanallur range, covering Saravanampatti, Peelamedu and Singanallur police station limits.
The station has a strength of 16 women personnel, including five Special Sub-Inspectors, three Head Constables and seven Grade-II Constables.
