In a major catch, the Sivaganga district police seized three kilograms of methamphetamine, which worth ₹15 crore in black market, and arrested four persons in connection to this on Sunday.

    Speaking to media persons, Sivaganga Superintendent of Police Shiva Prasad said that following a tip-off, a special team of police tracked the suspects for the last three days and zeroed in on them. The recovered goods were tested by experts and it has been confirmed as methamphetamine by the laboratory authorities.

    The names of the arrested persons were given as Rasool Dheen, 35, son of Liyaqath Ali, Tipu Sultan Nagar, Pudur, Illayankudi (currently in Triplicane, Chennai), Abu alias Sagubar Sadiq, 26, son of Kadar Mukthar Ellis Road Triplicane, Chennai, Mohamed Hafeez, 28, son of Kadar Mohideen and Mohamed Rafeeq alias Babu, 30, son of Shamimullah of Tiruchi.

    The SP said that discreet probe indicated that three among them - Rasool Dheen, Abu alias Sagubar Sadiq and Mohamed Rafeeq were operating as “kuruvi” (a term used to identify persons engaged in smuggling gold, electronic gadgets and drugs) for eight to nine years.

    The confessions revealed that the gang had planned to smuggle the narcotics to Malaysia and were carrying it from Chennai to Bengaluru by road. However, due to some internal issues, they had dropped the plan and instead brought it to Sivaganga. There was a feud among them in sharing the booty and it came to light.

    An investigating officer said that they have seized three mobile phones a two-wheeler and ₹3,000 cash from the accused. The probe was inconclusive and information such as from where the gang had collected the narcotics and it was intended to whom in Malaysia and among others were still under way, he added.

    A case under the NDPS Act has been registered. The four persons were produced before a court.
