Six members of a family, including two children, died on the spot in a collision involving a car and a tanker lorry near Uthukuli in Tiruppur district on Friday evening. The collision occurred at Kakkapallam as the car was proceeding to Vijayamangalam.
The Uthukuli police identified the deceased as Mugilan, 35, of Saminathapuram in Salem district, his father-in-law Easwaran, 55, mother-in-law Thirumagal, 50, grandmother Sivagami, 65, and his children Srinithu, 3, and Kanish, a nine-month-old baby. Mukilan’s wife Hema, 30, was admitted to a private hospital and was subsequently shifted to the Tiruppur Government Medical College with a fractured limb.
The family was returning to Salem from Palladam after attending the funeral of a relative when the car collided with the speeding tanker lorry. The Uthukuli police retrieved the bodies from the mangled remains of the car and shifted them to the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
The Uthukuli police have registered a case and and arrested lorry driver Palanisamy, 58.
