The Electronics City police have cracked the murder of an unidentified man within 36 hours, tracing his identity as Syed Rafique and arresting his son and son-in-law, who allegedly killed him over family disputes and dumped his body in a eucalyptus grove near Singasandra Lake.

The accused have been identified as the deceased’s son Shahenshah, 27, an autorickshaw driver, and son-in-law Syed Sharukh, 21, a bike taxi rider. Both have been remanded in judicial custody.

The deceased, a 50-year-old mechanic, was found dead behind an apartment in Vittasandra village under the jurisdiction of Electronics City Police Station. A murder case was registered on July 4 based on a complaint filed by a resident seeking the identification of the deceased and action against those responsible.

The police said the deceased was a chronic alcoholic who allegedly subjected his family to repeated harassment. He had earlier been admitted to a de-addiction centre and later returned to his native place in Tamil Nadu. However, after returning to Bengaluru, he allegedly insisted on staying with his family and continued to harass them.

According to the police, a quarrel broke out between the deceased, his son and his son-in-law at Bommanahalli on July 4. Unable to bear his alleged abuse and harassment, the two accused assaulted him, forced him into an autorickshaw and strangled him with a rope while transporting him. They later dumped the body in an isolated eucalyptus grove near Singasandra Lake in an attempt to destroy evidence.

Within 24 hours of registering the case, the police established the victim’s identity and traced his family. Acting on clues recovered from the crime scene and the surrounding areas, investigators tracked down the accused and arrested them within 36 hours of taking up the investigation.

The accused were produced before the jurisdictional court on July 9 and remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is in progress.
