Nearly 100 students from VLB Janakiammal College of Arts and Science and Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women participated in a road safety awareness campaign organised by the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Uyir at the Gandhipuram junction in Coimbatore city on Friday (July 10, 2026).

The students distributed pamphlets to motorists and pedestrians and urged road users to wear helmets, stop behind the stop line at traffic signals, fasten seat belts, use rear-view mirrors, and carry valid driving licence, registration certificate, insurance and pollution under control (PUC) certificate while driving.

Police personnel who took part in the campaign emphasised that third-party insurance claims could be affected if a vehicle did not possess a valid Fitness Certificate (FC), wherever applicable, and urged motorists to keep all vehicle documents up to date. They also advised vehicle owners to opt for Personal Accident Cover (PAC).

    D. Balasundaram, trustee of Uyir, said road safety awareness should begin at a young age so that safe driving habits become part of everyday life. “Enforcement alone cannot ensure road safety. Young people should understand and follow traffic rules voluntarily,” he said.

Mr. Balasundaram added that Uyir has also been submitting suggestions to local bodies on improving road infrastructure, including carrying out patchwork on damaged roads wherever required and installing blinking traffic warning signals at critical junctions to improve road safety.
