A survey conducted by Greenpeace India found that 81% of 245 Malleswaram residents surveyed called the State government’s proposal to build a convention centre at the Mysore Lamps site a “stupid” idea and said the land should instead be preserved as a public green space.

The survey, conducted under Greenpeace India’s Bengaluru Rising campaign, was released on Sunday during Namma Hasiru Nadige, a community walk organised by Greenpeace India and residents’ group Preeti4Malleswaram to highlight the importance of protecting the neighbourhood’s green spaces.

Residents took part in the walk, carrying banners displaying the survey findings and urging the State government to retain the Mysore Lamps site as a public green space instead of developing it into a convention centre.

B.K. Sivaram, president of Kadu Malleshwara Galeyara Balaga, said the Mysore Lamps site formed an important part of Malleswaram’s history and identity and should be preserved for future generations. He also suggested that the site be renamed after Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.

Residents said the survey reflects preference for conserving the Mysore Lamps site rather than replacing it with another concrete structure and stressed that protecting and expanding public green spaces was essential for improving biodiversity, climate resilience and the quality of life in Bengaluru.

The residents also requested the State government to engage with them before taking a final decision on the future of the Mysore Lamps site.
