As the Water Resources Department has not responded positively to their demand for supply of water in the PAP Main Canal through laying of pipelines, farmers of Kangayam-Vellakovil belt in the tail-end where supply shortages have affected farming activities have begun mobilising political support to convince the State government of the need for modernising the project with twin benefits of cost-advantage and realisation of intended outcome.
On Tuesday, the PAP Vellakovil Branch Canal - Veeranampalayam Village Water Users’ Association reached out to PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss seeking his support for their demand.
Livelihood of two lakh families hinges on sufficient water supply to the tail-end of PAP Main Canal, P. Velusamy, president of the association said.
The project was executed during the Kamaraj era with a futuristic mindset, and six decades hence, the scientific and technological advancements in water management at the global level ought to be factored in for the modernisation project, Mr. Velusamy emphasised.
Substantial extent of water released from Thirumoorthy Dam into the PAP Main Canal is lost due to evaporation, leakages, and unauthorised drawal in the upstream.
Farmers in the tail-end, who are the most affected, have been fighting for long for equitable distribution.
