The Tambaram City Police have arrested seven drug traffickers in two separate operations and seized a total of 12.7 kg of ganja, along with vehicles, mobile phones and a knife, as part of their ongoing crackdown on narcotics. Three of them are the history sheeters who were supplying ganja and narcotic substances to labourers in Perumbakkam.
Acting on the instructions of Tambaram City Police Commissioner Prem Anand Sinha, Perumbakkam police conducted a raid on Thursday, following specific intelligence about ganja being smuggled from Andhra Pradesh and sold in the city. The police team rushed to the identified location and intercepted the suspects.
The police arrested Senthil Kumar alias Kulla Kandai, 38, Kalaivani alias Kalai, 31, Tamil Arasan, 31, and Hemanth Kumar, and seized 7.6 kg of ganja from their possession. Investigation revealed that the accused had allegedly procured the contraband from Andhra Pradesh for selling to labourers in and around Perumbakkam.
Police said three of those arrested are history-sheeters. Senthil Kumar is a Category ‘A’ history-sheeter with 15 previous cases, while Kalaivani and Tamil Arasan are Category ‘B’ history-sheeters with eight and five previous cases, respectively. Two cases were registered at the Perumbakkam police station under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and all four accused were remanded in judicial custody.
In another operation, the Guduvanchery Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) arrested Abdul Rasak, 22, Dinesh Kumar and Sivamani, 27, in connection with ganja trafficking. Police initially intercepted Abdul Rasak near the Guduvanchery railway station on July 8 and seized 1.5 kg of ganja, a two-wheeler, and a mobile phone. Based on his confession, Dinesh Kumar was apprehended at Sivaganga in the early hours of July 9. Further investigation led to the arrest of Sivamani near the Guduvanchery bus stand, where police seized 3.5 kg of ganja, a knife, a two-wheeler and a mobile phone. The trio were remanded to judicial custody.
Tambaram City Police said the drive against the sale of narcotics would continue and appealed to the public to share information on drug trafficking and other illegal narcotics activities.
