The Government Primary Teachers’ Association on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Sirsa Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police demanding strict legal action against a man accused of assaulting a JBT teacher while he was on election duty.
District president Vijay Kumar said the victim, Harpal Singh, a teacher posted at Nathusari Chopta, was deployed by the Election Commission for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He was distributing voter verification forms and assisting residents with online submissions at Booth no. 73 in Nathusari Kalan.
According to the association, the incident took place around 11 am on July 10 when Harpal Singh and his assistant, Deepak Kumar, were visiting voters’ homes as part of the official exercise. They alleged that a local resident, Dharamveer Mothia, obstructed the government work, misbehaved with the teacher and later assaulted him, leaving him injured. The association also claimed that the teacher’s clothes were torn during the incident. The police at Nathusari Chopta have registered an FIR against the accused under relevant Sections of the BNS.
The teachers’ body said the attack on a government employee engaged in election-related work had created fear and resentment among teachers. It urged the administration to ensure the safety of officials performing election duties.
