Team India all-rounder Washington Sundar is reportedly a doubt for the upcoming two-match away Test series against Sri Lanka due to injury. The Shubman Gill-led side begins the second half of their 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) campaign from Saturday, August 15 onwards, at the Galle International Stadium.

According to a report by the Times of India, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will name the squad for the Sri Lanka Tests in the coming days. The selectors are expected to convene soon to pick the squads, with initial discussions having already taken place during the Men in Blue's recent white-ball tour of England.

One of the major decisions that the selectors have to tackle is Washington Sundar's fitness. The all-rounder suffered a hamstring injury in the second ODI against England in Cardiff, and was subsequently ruled out of the series finale as well. He is set to report to the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru soon, but his recovery might take atleast a couple of weeks.

Team India are scheduled to depart for Sri Lanka on August 4, leaving only a small room for Washington Sundar to recover, get his clearance from the physios, and join the squad.

The focus will be predominantly on the spinners due to the traditional subcontinent conditions. The visitors might even consider featuring four spinners, having recently integrated the likes of Harsh Dubey and Manav Suthar into the red-ball setup after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. They will have the opportunity to get a hang of the conditions, as a four-day warm-up game has also been scheduled before the series.

Considering Team India's vulnerable position in the WTC Standings after a shocking home series loss to South Africa in late 2025, a strong first-choice is expected to be named for the Sri Lanka tests. Star players Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, who were not part of the one-off Test win against Afghanistan, will return to the team.

Jasprit Bumrah recently missed the third ODI against England at Lord's after suffering an injury while fielding in the previous match. However, since it was an impact injury that brought on swelling afterwards, he is likely to be fully fit in time for the red-ball tour.
