The Telangana Police will be installing 862 more CCTV cameras across the three police commissionerates and 12 additional mobile ‘She Toilets’ are to be deployed in Hyderabad as part of the Telangana government’s Safe City project aimed at making urban spaces safer for women, children and pedestrians.

The measures were reviewed at a high-level meeting chaired by Director-General of Police (DGP) C.V. Anand on Thursday, where police, GHMC and officials from various government departments took stock of the technology-driven urban safety project.

The State already has 2,306 Safe City CCTV cameras in operation, including 974 in the Hyderabad Commissionerate limits, 574 in Cyberabad and 758 in Malkajgiri limits. A total of 862 cameras are being installed, with 452 planned for Hyderabad, 297 for Cyberabad and 113 for Malkajgiri.

DGP Anand directed officials to ensure that the cameras remain functional at all times, stressing that gaps in surveillance could undermine the purpose of the project.

The meeting also focused on women’s safety and convenience. Officials informed the DGP that 12 mobile She Toilets were currently operating in Hyderabad. He directed that 12 more be installed at important public locations to provide women with safe and accessible sanitation facilities.

The DGP also reviewed the work of SHE Teams, Bharosa Centres, the HawkEye App and Safe Travel initiatives, and appreciated their role in improving women’s safety. He said all departments should work in coordination to ensure that women could move around the city without fear.

Road safety was another key focus of the meeting. Pedestrian signals have been installed at 77 locations, while GHMC officials were directed to repair and ensure the proper functioning of 404 traffic signals already installed across the city.

The Safe City project uses high-definition CCTV cameras, Integrated Command and Control Centres, Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, emergency response systems and Artificial Intelligence to improve crime prevention and emergency response.
