Cristian Romero has urged Argentina to work on keeping things tight at the back, saying the team have “conceded too many goals lately” at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite being among the unbeaten sides so far, Argentina have been a shadow of themselves since the knockout rounds of the World Cup started.

They managed to get past tournament minnows Cape Verde in the round of 32, securing a 3-2 win after 120 minutes of football. Egypt then had them on the ropes in the round of 16 after 70 minutes, although they controversially turned the game around to win 3-2.

Speaking at a press conference, Romero expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance so far but admitted that their quarter-final clash against Switzerland will be difficult.

Argentina are the reigning champions of the FIFA World Cup, having won the tournament in the 2022 edition in Qatar. Should Argentina get past Switzerland, they would face the winner of the match between England and Norway in the semi-finals.

Romero will be available to play against Switzerland on Sunday, as per reports. The defender was withdrawn in stoppage time of Argentina’s round of 16 match against Egypt with an apparent physical issue.

However, fears over the 28-year-old’s fitness have been allayed, with Argentine outlet El Día reporting that subsequent tests have ruled out any concerning injury, noting that the player only suffered a cramp in his left calf.

As a result, Romero is expected to continue his central defensive partnership with Lisandro Martinez against Switzerland. Romero has played in four of La Albiceleste’s five matches so far at the tournament.
