The East Palace is a 2026 South Korean dark fantasy series that debuted on Netflix on July 17, 2026. Directed by Choi Jung-kyu and written by Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, it stars Nam Joo-hyuk, Roh Yoon-seo, and Cho Seung-woo.
Set in a fictional historical era, The East Palace follows ghost-slayer Gu-cheon and court lady Saeng-gang, who can communicate with the dead, as they investigate a cursed royal palace. Together, they uncover the truth behind its hauntings while confronting dangerous spirits and long-buried secrets.
The story of The East Palace began thirty years earlier, when a court lady favored by the king was falsely accused of having an affair by the jealous queen and executed while pregnant. Before dying, she vowed to return as a vengeful spirit and destroy the royal bloodline.
Soon afterward, every crown prince except the current King Ju Sang was killed. He was the son of a court lady who had abandoned palace life after his birth. King Ju Sang grew up locked in a power struggle with the queen dowager.
When the king's sons begin dying in the same manner, he refuses to acknowledge the supposed curse at first, fearing it will allow the queen dowager to replace his bloodline. After the last crown prince dies and Ju Sang's last surviving son, Prince Yeongan, collapses, he secretly summons Gu-cheon and forces him to destroy the mysterious pond spirit.
He puts the court lady Saeng-gang in charge of keeping an eye on Gu-cheon. Saeng-gang can hear the dead and is secretly the king's daughter. However, she has been demoted to a court lady after her ability to hear spirits is discovered.
Gu-cheon soon discovers the palace is filled with restless spirits. As he reluctantly enters the spirit realm through the palace pond, he realizes the mystery is far greater than a single ghost.
His investigation reveals that years earlier, the queen dowager had burned several court ladies alive after accusing them of talking about the curse of the favored court lady. Although Gu-cheon gets rid of their spirits, soon he realizes they are not the true spirits of the pond.
After Prince Yeongan dies, Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang investigate further and learn that many spirits remain trapped because of the palace's sins. During a battle with evil spirits sent by the queen dowager, Gu-cheon loses his eyesight. The late crown prince's spirit reveals that he has been poisoned and claims the real evil is not a ghost but King Ju Sang himself.
Saeng-gang struggles to believe him until a deadly plague spreads through the kingdom. Instead of helping the infected villagers, the king orders them to be killed to prevent the disease from spreading, convincing Saeng-gang that her father has become consumed by cruelty.
Seeking answers, Saeng-gang visits her grandmother, who has always cared for her after her mother's death. There she uncovers the greatest secret of the palace. The former court lady admits she has poisoned every prince before her own son so that King Ju Sang could inherit the throne. She has used the curse of the favored court lady to cover her deed.
She also confesses that Saeng-gang's mother, who has been a court lady too, has helped carry out this action and conceal the murders. Ju Sang later marries her to keep her alive. But his mother later poisoned her too to keep the secret hidden.
The queen dowager then tries to poison Saeng-gang, but the late crown prince's spirit saves her, and in return possesses her body to attack the king. Gu-cheon, realizing this, confronts the possessed Saeng-gang.
He restores his sight by replacing his eyes with those of a spirit. Then, with help from Saeng-gang's mother's spirit, he separates the crown prince from Saeng-gang and returns her soul safely to her body.
After that, Saeng-gang starts investigating more and finds out that the late crown prince could hear spirits, just like herself. He later discovers the truth about their grandmother through the spirits and poisons his two older brothers and covers it up in the same way, so he can become king.
Knowing exactly what his son has done, King Ju Sang kills the crown prince himself to stop him from becoming the king. Filled with resentment, the prince returned as an evil spirit beyond redemption and murdered Prince Yeongan.
The crown prince gathers the spirits of villagers who have been massacred during the plague and leads them against the palace. As Gu-cheon gets prepared to fight them, a ghost warns Saeng-gang that he will die during the battle.
Determined to save him, Saeng-gang drugs him and enters the spirit realm alone, but Gu-cheon follows after accepting a bargain with the Primordial Gwi-mae. In exchange for the only weapon capable of destroying an evil spirit, he becomes permanently bound to the spirit realm.
At the same time, King Ju Sang holds a rite to apologize to the spirits for the slaughter of the plague victims and promises to care for their surviving families. This makes the villagers' spirits leave the human world.
Gu-cheon then faces the crown prince in one final battle. Knowing that destroying an evil spirit could condemn him as well, he sacrifices himself to save Saeng-gang. He destroys the prince's soul with the Primordial Gwi-mae's weapon and gives Saeng-gang the last of his life force so she can escape the spirit realm.
After that, three days pass, and everyone believes Gu-cheon has died, but Saeng-gang refuses to leave the side of his unconscious body. Soon after, having fulfilled his debt to the spirit realm, Gu-cheon regains consciousness.
In the aftermath, the queen dowager loses her sanity, while the former queen dowager is exiled for her crimes. King Ju Sang begins reflecting on his actions and allows Gu-cheon to leave the palace.
As Gu-cheon departs, Saeng-gang and Ggeomeoksali accompany him to begin a new journey together. However, the chain connecting Gu-cheon to the spirit realm remains attached to his wrist, suggesting his connection to that world is far from over. On this note, episode 8 of The East Palace comes to a close, bringing the series to its conclusion.
There is a possibility of The East Palace season 2, although Netflix has not announced a renewal. While the series is currently listed as an eight-episode limited series, the ending leaves Gu-cheon's story open and sets up the potential for another supernatural adventure.
The East Palace is available for streaming on Netflix.
