England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of the upcoming edition of The Hundred with a knee injury.

Bethell — who was set to captain the Birmingham Phoenix franchise — is thus in doubt for England’s upcoming Test series against Pakistan in August as well.

“The 22-year-old will continue his rehabilitation programme under the guidance of the ECB medical team and is expected to focus on his recovery over the coming weeks,” said a statement released by the franchise.

He was last in action in England’s three-match ODI series against India, where he scored 109 runs at an average of 36.33, and was named Player of the Match in the series decider for returns of 91 with the bat and one for 49 with the ball.

In the statement, Bethell said, “It’s frustrating to miss out on The Hundred, especially representing Birmingham Phoenix in front of our supporters at Edgbaston. Unfortunately, I need to take the time to get back to full fitness.

“My focus now is on completing my rehabilitation and returning fully fit. I’d like to thank the fans, my teammates and the medical staff for all their support, and I’ll be cheering the boys on throughout the competition.”

Donovan Ferreria has been named as Bethell’s captaincy replacement, and a player replacement will be named in due course.
