The excitement around one of the year's most anticipated films, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, is growing with each passing day. From tickets reportedly costing as much as Rs 3,100 to fans travelling long distances and even crossing borders for special screenings, the film has already become a major cinematic event even before its release. Now, the story of one superfan from California has added another unusual detail to the growing frenzy around Nolan's epic.

Fan delays pregnancy to watch The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm

Amber Connaghan, a 29-year-old tech editor living in the California desert, has been planning her The Odyssey experience for more than a year. The fan has reportedly delayed plans to have her second child so that she can watch Christopher Nolan's new film on its opening day.

Connaghan has also prepared for a three-hour drive to the nearest cinema screening the film in IMAX 70mm. For her, the wait for the movie is clearly not something she is willing to compromise on.

Speaking about her decision to Variety, she said, "One of my friends got pregnant last year, and she’s like, ‘OK, it’s time for you to have your second child,’ I was like, ‘No, I have to wait a few months. Otherwise, it’s going to be too close to ‘The Odyssey.’"

Her story is just one example of the extraordinary lengths fans are going to for Nolan's upcoming film.

Fans are travelling for the biggest format

The excitement has been fuelled by Christopher Nolan's decision to shoot the entire film using IMAX cameras. This makes The Odyssey the first film to be filmed entirely with IMAX cameras.

However, not every IMAX theatre is equipped to screen a film in 70mm. As a result, fans are travelling across state lines and, in some cases, even planning international trips to watch the film in the format they believe will offer the ultimate experience.

Some moviegoers have booked tickets months in advance, while others have reportedly purchased tickets for multiple screenings. A few fans are even willing to attend screenings at unusual hours, including late-night and early-morning shows, to watch Nolan's latest film in IMAX 70mm.

The excitement has also extended to ticket prices, with reports of premium screenings costing as much as Rs 3,100, further highlighting the demand for the film.

    What is The Odyssey about?

Based on Homer's ancient epic poem, The Odyssey follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he attempts to make his way home after the Trojan War. His journey is far from easy and takes him through a world filled with mythical creatures, dangerous encounters and supernatural forces.

The story features several iconic figures from Greek mythology, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, Calypso, Circe and Athena. At the centre of the story is Odysseus' long and dangerous journey back to Ithaca, where his wife Penelope and son Telemachus await his return.

    Star-studded cast of The Odyssey

Matt Damon plays Odysseus in the film, with the actor taking on the central role of the legendary Greek king. Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope, Odysseus' wife, who has waited years for his return while dealing with the men competing for her hand.

Tom Holland plays Telemachus, Odysseus and Penelope's son, who has grown up without his father and sets out on his own journey to learn more about him.

The ensemble cast also includes Robert Pattinson as Antinous, one of Penelope's suitors, and Zendaya as the goddess Athena. Lupita Nyong'o plays Helen and Clytemnestra, while Charlize Theron appears as Calypso.

The film further features John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, Samantha Morton as Circe, Himesh Patel as Eurylochus, Elliot Page as Sinon, Bill Irwin as the Cyclops, Mia Goth as Melantho, Corey Hawkins as Polybus and Travis Scott as a bard in the court of Ithaca.

The Odyssey becomes Christopher Nolan's first feature movie after Oppenheimer, which won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Nolan. The filmmaker is now returning with a massive adaptation of one of the most influential stories in Western literature.

The Odyssey is scheduled to release in Indian theatres on July 17, followed by its global release on July 18. With fans already planning long road trips, booking tickets months ahead and even rearranging major life plans to watch it in IMAX 70mm, Nolan's film is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the year.
