Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan's much-awaited epic The Odyssey has finally reached theatres after preview screenings on July 16, with the worldwide release taking place on July 17. Backed by Universal Pictures, the film is already drawing large crowds, especially on IMAX screens, thanks to Nolan's reputation for creating films that are meant to be experienced on the big screen.

While audiences are rushing to cinemas, many are also wondering when the film will arrive on OTT. As of now, Universal Pictures has not announced an official digital or streaming release date. However, Nolan's previous release pattern and Universal's distribution model offer a fair idea of what viewers can expect.

Where will The Odyssey release online?

There is no confirmed OTT release date for The Odyssey yet. Since the film is distributed by Universal Pictures, it is expected to follow the studio's home release strategy, although Christopher Nolan is known for keeping his films in theatres much longer than usual.

Universal's regular releases generally arrive on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) after about five weeks. But Nolan has consistently pushed for longer theatrical runs, believing audiences should first experience his films in cinemas.

His Oscar-winning Oppenheimer followed a much longer schedule. It reached digital rental platforms around four months after its theatrical debut and later made its way to streaming.

Going by that trend, The Odyssey is expected to become available for digital purchase or rental around November 2026 before moving to subscription streaming in early 2027.

Once its theatrical and PVOD windows end, The Odyssey is expected to stream first on Peacock in the United States since it is a Universal Pictures release. While there is no official confirmation, several industry reports suggest an early 2027 streaming debut is the most likely timeline.

Before that, the film is expected to be available for purchase or rent through digital platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube Movies.

For other audiences, especially in India, there is still no official announcement regarding the streaming partner. Reports have speculated that the film could later arrive on JioHotstar in multiple languages, but the platform has not confirmed any deal so far. Viewers will have to wait for an official announcement.

    What is The Odyssey about?

Based on Homer's ancient Greek epic poem, The Odyssey follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, after his victory in the Trojan War. The King of Ithaca begins a dangerous journey home that stretches over ten years as he battles mythical creatures, powerful gods and impossible challenges.

Back home, Queen Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and their son Telemachus (Tom Holland) struggle to protect the kingdom while several suitors believe Odysseus is dead and compete to marry Penelope. Robert Pattinson plays Antinous, one of the men trying to seize control of Ithaca.

    Star-studded cast and record-breaking production

Apart from Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson, the film features Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, Samantha Morton as Circe, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Corey Hawkins, John Leguizamo and Bill Irwin.

The 2-hour 52-minute epic also marks a major milestone for Nolan. It is the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX 70mm cameras after new camera technology was developed to make full-length filming possible in the format.
