Former Indian opener Sadagoppan Ramesh slammed the team management for their treatment of Rohit Sharma amid the ongoing ODI series against England. Following his poor outing with the bat in the second ODI, various reports suggested that the third and final ODI at Lord's could be Rohit's final game for India.
The 39-year-old has been a subject of discussion ever since he was stripped of ODI captaincy last year, with his place in the Indian squad for the 2027 World Cup hanging by a thread. With other young and in-form batters waiting in the wings, Rohit's back-to-back failures in the ongoing England ODI series have potentially made it a point of no return for the champion batter.
However, in reaction to the latest development with Rohit on his YouTube channel, Ramesh said (1:54):
He added:
Rohit has averaged a lowly 18.50 in the ongoing England series at a woeful strike rate of 54.41. Furthermore, his form in ODIs this year has been far from impressive, with an average of 30.12 in eight matches.
Sadagoppan Ramesh further believes Rohit Sharma has moved away from his all-out attacking batting style, as seen in the 2023 ODI World Cup, because of the pressure of losing his place in the side. The veteran batter, who batted at strike rates of over 100 in ODIs in each of the last four years, has scored at only a rate of 88.60 this year.
The former opener believes India could struggle without Rohit on the bouncy South African pitches at next year's World Cup.
Rohit Sharma is the fourth-leading scorer in ODI World Cup history with 1,575 runs at an average of over 60 and a strike rate of 105.49, including a record seven centuries.
