A three-year-old boy was killed when a heavy iron plate from a excavator machine fell on him near Madhavaram on Saturday (July 11, 2026) night.

Chennai city police said the boy’s father Vignesh was working in a private company and resided in the Kannappa Swamy Nagar of Kavangarai, near Puzhal. On Saturday evening, he and his three-year-old son Shahrukh Easwaran were proceeding to a shop to buy food. As the duo was returning home by walk, a huge iron plate was being lifted by the crane of the excavator machine for executing a sewage project work which was underway.

As they were walking on the footpath, the rope from the crane holding the iron plate suddenly snapped, causing the plate to fall. The plate fell on both the father and son. While Vignesh narrowly escaped, the iron plate fell onto the abdomen of the boy. Critically injured, the boy was rushed to a private hospital in Madhavaram, where he was pronounced dead.

The CCTV footage of the accident has gone viral on social media.

The Puzhal police sent the body of the deceased to Government Stanley Hospital for post-mortem.
