The Tirunelveli City Police organised a meeting with private bus owners on Tuesday as an aged couple were crushed to death by a speeding bus on Monday.

Chairing the meeting, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli East, Saravanan, said the drivers of buses and trucks had the greater responsibility to strictly follow road safety rules, considering the safety of every road user. Hence, the drivers of heavy vehicles should operate their buses or lorries at ‘safe speed’ and avoid rash driving that often killed several innocents on the road.

“Those who dare to defy law will be booked. Moreover, the vehicles involved in such violations will be seized immediately,” Mr. Saravanan warned.

While the private bus owners were asked to instruct their drivers to operate the vehicles at safe speed within the city limits, sources in the police said the owners of mini buses were not warned to strictly stick to the ‘route permit’ as a couple of mini buses were being operated in violation of the route permit for the past couple of years.
