The State Vigilance and Monitoring Committee for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) has been reconstituted following the assumption of office by the Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay-led government.
As per the rules, the Chief Minister will be the Chairman of the committee, while 59 members, including all elected representatives to Parliament and the Legislative Assembly from the State who belong to the SCs and STs, have been inducted as members.
The Ministers in charge of Home, Finance and Social Justice, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP/HoPF and two representatives from National Commission for SCs and STs will automatically become the members of the committee. Since Mr. Vijay holds the Home portfolio, Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson and Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu have been included as members.
Apart from them, seven other Ministers, one Rajya Sabha MP, and seven Lok Sabha MPs, all belonging to the SCs; and 37 MLAs belonging to the SCs/STs were included in the committee as members, while the Secretary, Social Justice will serve as its coordinator. The committee is mandated to meet twice a year to review the implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, among others.
