NFL legend Tom Brady reckons Lionel Messi's Argentina's 3-2 come-from-behind Round of 16 win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup over Egypt on Tuesday (July 7) in Atlanta trumps the New England Patriots' 28-3 Super Bowl triumph in 2017.

Messi and Co. were seemingly on their way out when they found themselves two goals down with 11 minutes remaining and Messi missing a first-half penalty. However, the holders dug dip, with Cristian Romero sparking their comeback before Messi equalised four minutes later.

The Albiceleste launched wave after wave of attack on the Pharaohs goal, and the pressure told when Enzo Fernandez netted the winner in the third minute of stoppage time.

Making reference to the Patriots' Super Bowl triumph nearly a decade ago, where the Patriots trailed the Atlanta Falcons 28-3 late in the third quarter before triumphing 34-28 in overtime, Brady, who was the Super Bowl MVP in that game, said about Messi and Co.'s win:

Lionel Messi of Argentina had another memorable outing in the FIFA World Cup as the defending champions survived an almighty scare against Egypt to move into the quarter-finals.

Making a record 31st start in a World Cup game by any player (male or female), Messi's day started on a sour note when he saw a 20th-minute penalty kept out by Egypt custodian Mostafa Shobeir. That made the Argentine the first player in World Cup history to miss two penalties in a single edition.

However, the day ended with Messi scoring his team's equaliser en route winning a record 11th Man of the Match award in the competition. His eight goals this edition are also the most by any player, one ahead of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

With a 21st career FIFA World Cup goal, Lionel Messi moved two goals ahead of Mbappe on the all-time list as he looks to add a first World Cup Golden Boot, with the Albiceleste looking to extend their winning streak to a competition-best 12 if they beat Switzerland or Colombia in the last-eight this weekend.
