The Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners and Suppliers Association in a press meet organised in the city on Wednesday highlighted a number of issues affecting the operation of trucks.

They said that the traffic police personnel threaten to file drunk driving cases against truck drivers without any valid reason.

A. Ganesh Bengera, president of the association, said that in the past three months, the city traffic police personnel have been harassing truck drivers regularly by detaining the trucks for more than four hours to file drunk driving cases against the drivers.

But when the truck owner or the driver ask for a proper case to be filed, they refuse to do so, holding the vehicles for days, leading to delayed deliveries, he added. The association members also pointed out that if truck drivers are involved in any accident, the police officials, without proper investigation, file the First Information Report (FIR) against the drivers, and in some cases harass the drivers, demanding money. This has resulted in drivers not willing to take up the job of driving trucks. The association wanted the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) to hold a meeting with truck owners to resolve the issue at the earliest.
