The price of finger turmeric crossed ₹18,000 a quintal at the Erode Regulated Market on Wednesday (July 15, 2026), increasing by over ₹2,600 a quintal in two weeks owing to lower arrivals and strong domestic and export demand.

Finger turmeric was auctioned at the Erode Regulated market between ₹12,369 and ₹18,463 a quintal, while bulb turmeric fetched between ₹11,569 and ₹16,639 a quintal. On July 1, finger turmeric was sold in the price range of ₹11,559 and ₹15,846 a quintal, and bulb turmeric between ₹10,559 and ₹13,611 a quintal.

Average daily arrivals, which stood at 250 to 300 lots of 80 kg each last month, have fallen to 75 - 125 lots this week. During the corresponding period last year, finger turmeric fetched an average of ₹12,000 to ₹14,000 a quintal

    R. Sathyamoorthy, secretary of the Erode Turmeric Merchants and Warehouse Owners’ Association, attributed the price rise to reduced arrivals and improving demand in both, domestic and export markets. Turmeric marketing season had ended across the country, resulting in lower arrivals of fresh produce in major markets. Although remunerative prices during the 2025-26 season had encouraged farmers to expand cultivation and supply seed turmeric to several States, production was subsequently affected by drought conditions associated with the El Nino weather pattern.

The adverse weather affected turmeric-growing regions not only in Tamil Nadu but also in Maharashtra, Telangana and Karnataka, leading to lower output, he said.

Mr. Sathyamoorthy said domestic demand had strengthened, while exports had also picked up following improvement in international trade conditions. The combined effect of lower production and higher demand had pushed up prices. He added that stocks of old turmeric accumulated over the past several years had declined significantly, narrowing the gap between supply and demand.
