Kolathur Police have arrested two men for allegedly pledging a fake gold chain at a pawn shop in Kolathur and cheating the owner of ₹97,000.
According to the police, Eshwar Kumar, 62, who runs a jewellery pawn shop on Erikkarai Street in Periyar Nagar, lodged a complaint stating that a man visited the shop on July 11 and pledged a gold chain weighing about one-and-a-half sovereigns with a shop employee. The man received a loan of ₹97,000 and left.
During a routine verification of pledged jewellery later that day, the shop owner found that the chain was counterfeit. Based on the complaint, the V-6 Kolathur Crime Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
After analysing CCTV camera footage from the shop, the police arrested Purushothaman, 28, and Inbarasu, 44, both residents of Perambur, on Friday.
The police said efforts are under way to trace another person allegedly involved in the offence.
