Two persons died when an overhead water tank fell on a mini-lorry at Sathya Nagar bus stop near Mallasamudram in Namakkal district on Sunday evening.

    According to police, B. Subash (29), a resident of Sekkarapatti near Elachipalayam and a mini-lorry driver, headed to Krishnagiri district to unload eggs in a mini truck on Sunday evening. He was accompanied by loadman K. Kumar (45), a resident of Akkaraikadu near Mallasamudram.

    At Sathya Nagar Bus Stop near Mallasamudram, Subash lost control of the vehicle, which hit the pillar of an overhead water tank on the roadside. In the impact, the water tank, which was 25-years-old, collapsed and fell on the vehicle.

    On information, Fire and Rescue Service Department personnel rushed to the spot, removed the debris with an earthmover and retrieved the bodies.

    The bodies were sent to Namakkal Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

    The Mallasamudram police registered a case.

    The water in the tank had been supplied to more than 10 streets in the locality earlier in the day. As such, it was empty at the time of the accident, sources added.
