Charles De Ketelaere scored for Belgium against Spain during their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal in Los Angeles on Friday, to end Unai Simon’s long-standing clean sheet record.
The Spanish goalkeeper had not conceded in 649 minutes of play at the World Cup before the Belgium strike.
During the game against Austria in the Round of 32, Simon broke the record of Italy’s Walter Zenga, who went 517 minutes without allowing a goal and registered five consecutive clean sheets during the 1990 World Cup.
Simon, who plays for LaLiga side Athletic Bilbao, last conceded in the 51st minute during the group-stage game against Japan at the 2022 World Cup, which it lost 2-1.
He then kept a clean sheet against Morocco in the Round of 16, which Spain lost only after a penalty shootout.
The 29-year-old carried the run at this edition of the World Cup, not conceding a single goal as Spain paved its way through the group stage and reached the quarterfinals after beating Portugal 1-0.
